Robotic Assisted General Surgery

Single Incision Cholecystectomy

Cholecystectomy, or the surgical removal of the gallbladder, is done to remove gallstones or remove an infected or inflamed gallbladder.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sharp pain in the upper center or right abdomen
  • Low fever
  • Nausea and feeling bloated

Removing the gallbladder will help relieve pain and treat infection. The risks of not having a cholecystectomy include worsening symptoms, and the possibility of the gallbladder bursting.

Dr. David Ford is the most experienced surgeon in the Capital Region to offer single-incision removal of the gallbladder. The daVinci robotic-assisted surgical system allows the cholecystectomy procedure to be done with just one small incision, with the scar virtually hidden in the navel.

The benefits of this advanced procedure include:

  • virtually no scar
  • minimal pain
  • low blood loss
  • quicker recovery and return to normal activities

About the Procedure

The surgery can be performed in about an hour. The patient typically is ready to go home in less than 24 hours after the procedure. Unlike traditional laparoscopic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this new daVinci technology allows for a single incision in the belly button.
