Ellis Medicine is the first facility in the Capital Region to offer the LenSx Laser to help patients with cataracts in one or both eyes.
What is a Cataract?
A cataract, or clouding of the lens in the eye, affects the vision of nearly 70 percent of all Americans over age 80, according to the National Eye Institute.
When a cataract forms inside the eye, it prevents light and images from reaching the retina.
Cataract Symptoms
Symptoms of a cataract include:
- Blurred or cloudy vision
- Dull or faded colors
- Poor night vision or lights appearingto have a glow or halo effect
- Double vision
- Difficulty reading
The LenSx Laser
The LenSx Laser is the most advanced cataract removal technique available and is FDA-approved. The laser scans the eye to allow the surgeon to accurately make incisions in the cornea without a metal scalpel.
Compared to manual cataract procedures, the LenSx Laser helps surgeons achieve greater consistency and reproducibility when performing cataract surgery.
The Procedure
The LenSx Laser uses advanced technology to take a high-resolution image of the eye. Every eye is unique, so this advanced image map of the eyes allows the surgeon to see the individual difference in each eye.
Traditionally, metal surgical instruments and blades were used to remove cataracts. The LenSx Laser uses advanced laser technology to replace these manual incisions to produce a more consistent procedure on each patient.
The entire procedure lasts about 5-10 minutes.
