Ellis-St. Peter's Partnership Update: What Patients Need to Know
Monday, June 22, 2026
We understand that patients may have questions following the recent announcement regarding the partnership between Ellis Medicine and St. Peter's Health Partners.
The most important thing to know is this:
For most patients, nothing changes. You should continue seeing your doctors and receiving care as you do today. Physician offices, clinics, and practice locations remain open and operating normally. There are no immediate changes to appointments, referrals, or access to care.
Here are some other frequently asked questions:
Q: Do I need to find a new provider?
A: No, patients do not need to find a new provider or seek care elsewhere because of this announcement. Existing physician-patient relationships continue, and clinical programs and services remain in place.
Q: What does this mean for providers?
A: When the agreement concludes, most physicians and advanced practice providers currently employed by St. Peter's and practicing at Ellis facilities will transition back to Ellis Medicine employment. These providers are expected to continue practicing in the same locations and caring for the same patients.
Q: How did we get here?
A: Ellis and St. Peter's began exploring a merger in 2020 and entered into partnership agreements in 2022 designed to strengthen healthcare services throughout the region. During that time, many physicians and advanced practice providers, by design, became St. Peter's employees while continuing to care for patients at Ellis locations. The partnership also helped strengthen Ellis financially, operationally, and clinically. As part of our agreements, those employed St. Peter’s providers transition back to Ellis employment and continue to practice at Ellis locations.
Q: What happens next?
A: The Ellis Medicine Board of Trustees is currently evaluating strategic partnership opportunities through an ongoing Request for Proposal (RFP) process. A key priority is identifying a partner that shares Ellis Medicine's commitment to maintaining and strengthening healthcare services in Schenectady and the surrounding communities. The Board expects additional clarity in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, our focus remains unchanged: providing high-quality care and supporting our patients, providers, nurses, and staff.
Bottom line: At this time, patients do not need to take any action. We will continue to share updates as new information becomes available.
