Hybrid Operating Suite for Cardiac and Vascular Procedures is Centerpiece of $19 Million Facility

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Ellis Medicine’s new $19.4 million Center for Surgical & Interventional Medicine is now open at Ellis Hospital, providing patients with expanded and enhanced cardiac and vascular treatment options, as well as greater comfort and convenience.

Also known as “A2,” for the floor on which it is located, the new Center has brought together all of Ellis Medicine’s cardiology, vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery services in one location. Interventional radiology services will be relocated to the center in the spring of 2018.

The centerpiece of the center is Ellis’ first hybrid operating suite, equipped with all of the medical imaging and other technologies needed for both minimally invasive interventional procedures as well as traditional surgeries.

This is important for a variety of reasons. If a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure determines that major surgery is required, the surgery can be immediately performed without having to transfer the patient to a different procedure room, re-administer anesthesia or otherwise delay treatment. Similarly, surgeons have the ability to immediately transition a patient from a minimally invasive surgical procedure to a more extensive surgery if the patient’s condition requires.

The dual capability will also allow Ellis to offer new, advanced types of minimally invasive procedures for which it is necessary to have full surgical capabilities immediately available in the same procedure room in the event of complications.

“In the hybrid suite, our cardiovascular teams are able to move fluidly between a minimally invasive procedure and major surgery, or vice versa, if the situation warrants,” said Robert A. Joy, M.D., F.A.C.C., chief of cardiac sciences. “We firmly believe this will result in better quality of care and better patient outcomes.”

The hybrid suite will also be used as a second electrophysiology lab, increasing the hospital’s capacity to diagnose and treat patients with heart rhythm disorders.

The suite is approximately twice as large as the average procedure room in order to accommodate more than 100 medical devices and systems, including advanced medical imaging technologies, and medical teams with as many as eight clinicians.

Also among the highlights of the new center, Ellis has combined its pre-procedure preparation and post-procedure recovery units into one area, improving patient comfort, privacy and convenience, and creating important staffing efficiencies. The center also provides opportunities for greater collaboration by bringing doctors and other clinicians from multiple specialties together in one area of the hospital.

"Every square inch of this 25,000-square-foot facility is dedicated to helping Ellis Medicine reduce the number of cardiovascular-related deaths in our area,” said Jeff Winacott, senior director of cardiovascular services and interventional radiology. “Ellis is a nationally recognized leader in cardiovascular care, and we are continuously investing in the people, technologies, programs and facilities to improve our community’s heart health.”
