Ellis Hospital’s On-Site Pharmacy Now Open

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

Convenient access to medication can help patients better follow discharge instructions, improve outcomes, lower healthcare costs

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Ellis Hospital today celebrated the grand opening of its new on-site retail pharmacy, adding a convenient service for patients and their families who can now pick up prescriptions and over-the-counter medication before leaving the hospital.

Beyond convenience and improving the patient experience, the aim of the Ellis Nott Street Pharmacy is to allow for better access to necessary prescription medication, which improves the likelihood that patients follow discharge instructions. Patients properly taking their prescribed medication and following other discharge instructions can contribute to lowering both hospital re-admissions and overall healthcare costs, said Michael Darbyshire, Business Manager of the Nott Street Pharmacy who oversaw the project.

“When we improve access to necessary prescription medication, we ultimately take important steps toward improving healthcare outcomes,” Darbyshire said. “As patients visit the on-site pharmacy before they leave Ellis Hospital, we can also eliminate a stop for them on the way home. That’s huge for our patients who rely on public transportation or cab service. But it’s a convenient option that improves access for everyone.”

Ellis also celebrated the opening of the new ScriptCenter, a 24/7 automated pharmacy kiosk made possible by a generous contribution from Schenectady-based MVP Health Care. The kiosk, the first ScriptCenter in upstate New York, is now available exclusively for Ellis employees, expanding access by allowing Ellis’ 3,300-plus employees to conveniently pick up medications 24/7.

“We thank MVP for their contribution, which turned a great idea into reality,” said Paul Milton, Ellis Medicine President and CEO. “MVP is a valuable and trusted partner as we all work to improve healthcare outcomes, and the health of our community.”

Our partnership with Ellis Medicine to bring the ScriptCenter Pharmacy here for Ellis hospital employees speaks to our shared commitment of making healthcare more accessible and convenient,” said Denise Gonick, MVP Health Care President and CEO. “We’re pleased that the ScriptCenter Pharmacy is helping make healthcare easier for Ellis employees.”

The new Ellis Nott Street Pharmacy is located across from the Gift Shop, just inside the main Nott Street entrance of Ellis Hospital. It is open seven days a week:

·         8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; and

·         9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday

The pharmacy phone number is 518-612-8833. Find it online at ellisnottstreetpharmacy.com
