Ellis Hospital Earns National Accreditation for Echocardiography

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

Ellis Hospital has earned recognition as a nationally accredited hospital for echocardiography. The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) announced that it has granted the three-year term of accreditation in Echocardiography.

Echocardiography is used to assess different areas of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious cardiovascular conditions. An echocardiogram is essentially an ultrasound of the heart. One of the most common tests in cardiology, an echocardiogram allows providers the ability to visualize the heart, aorta, and other blood vessels.

The accreditation by the IAC means that Ellis Hospital has undergone an intensive application and review process and is found to be in compliance with published standards, demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care in echocardiography. Comprised of a detailed self-evaluation followed by a thorough review by a panel of medical experts, the IAC accreditation process enables both the critical operational and technical components of health care facilities to be assessed, including representative case studies and their corresponding final reports.

“The IAC accreditation is a reflection of Ellis Medicine’s dedication to continuous improvement, and that our talented, highly qualified staff remains committed to delivering quality medical care to our community,” said Dr. Saddam Abisse, Medical Director of Echocardiography, ECG and Stress Testing. “The IAC has certified that we follow strict guidelines in echocardiography, which ensure that we consistently make the most accurate diagnosis possible.”

Jeffery Winacott, senior director of cardiovascular services at Ellis Medicine, added: “We are proud of this achievement, and the credit goes to our talented staff who remain committed to ongoing education and continuous improvement. That’s what the culture here at Ellis Medicine is all about. Ultimately, it’s our patients who win as the IAC accreditation is one more sign of the consistent, quality care our staff delivers.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, followed closely by stroke as the fourth highest cause of death. According to the American Heart Association, more than 2,150 Americans die each day from cardiovascular disease which amounts to about one every 40 seconds.

Such statistics underscore the importance of diagnosis. There are many factors that contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on echocardiography. The training and experience of the sonographer performing the procedure, the type of equipment used and the quality assessment metrics each facility is required to measure, all contribute to a positive patient outcome. IAC accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indicator of consistent quality care and a dedication to continuous improvement.

Ellis Hospital, which is part of the larger Ellis Medicine system, continues to bring the latest and most promising technology and treatment options to deliver world-class cardiac services in a community hospital setting. Ellis offers sophisticated diagnostic tools, such as echocardiograms, to help doctors quickly identify and treat heart problems, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Patients continue to turn to the nationally recognized cardiac care team at Ellis for early diagnosis, advanced treatment options and integrated care.
