Belanger School of Nursing Celebrates Graduation
Tuesday, May 17, 2022
Our Belanger School of Nursing sent 57 new graduates into the nursing profession at its spring ceremony on Monday afternoon.
The commencement, Belanger's 117th, celebrated the latest crop of graduates at a critical time, as health care organizations locally and nationally grapple with a historic labor shortage in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Determined to make a difference in the lives of their patients and in the community, the Class of 2022 will represent the next generation as health care delivery evolves.
Dawne DeVoe, Dean at the Belanger School, reminded graduates that they started their journey two years ago at the height of the pandemic, a challenging time that now gives way to joy as they celebrate and begin their careers.
In her address to graduates, Ellis Chief Nursing Officer Meredith Robison urged them to always remember "the why" – that inspiration that drove them into nursing.
"That why is what makes it so special to you," Robison said. "Always step back and put yourself in your patients' shoes and ask yourself how you would want to be treated, how you would want your family treated. Treat every patient like they are your mother, your grandmother, your father, your brother, your sister. Keep your empathy."
"And if you're joining our Ellis Medicine team," Robison added, "I look forward to working more with you."
In his commencement address, Rodelin Sumiran, an Ellis ICU nurse and Belanger adjunct faculty member, talked about the indominable spirit of the nurse—forged through integrity, perseverance and self-control.
"There is more to gain than there is to lose as you move forward in your journey," he said. "I'm very sure you will make your alma mater proud."
