Ellis, St. Peter's Announce Collaboration Under Provider Agreement
Wednesday, November 3, 2021
Aim of Agreement is improved physician recruitment, retention—and the preservation of vital health care services in the community
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – November 3, 2021 – St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP), a member of Trinity Health, and Ellis Medicine today announced the signing of a Provider Transition Agreement (PTA), which marks the next important step toward their long-term vision of a full affiliation.
The PTA represents a commitment to preserve vital health care services by keeping providers practicing in the Schenectady community, and improving recruitment efforts that will attract new providers to the region. In addition, the agreement allows Ellis providers with the opportunity to collaborate more closely with their SPHP counterparts, and allows for access to information, data, and best practices from a national network in Trinity Health.
Under the agreement, 170 providers employed by Ellis Medicine, along with select management team members, will become employees of St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates (SPHPMA). Ellis patients will see no disruption in services and can continue to see their same providers in the same locations.
SPHPMA is one of the Capital Region’s largest multi-specialty physician groups, with nearly 700 physicians and advanced practitioners in more than 100 practice locations—prior to the addition of the 170 Ellis providers who will continue to practice out of their seven locations within Ellis Medicine.
“As leaders in health care, we have to look ahead with a focus on what’s best for the long-term health of our communities,” said Paul Milton, President and CEO of Ellis Medicine. “The biggest threat to both Ellis and health care access in Schenectady is the departure of physicians from our community. Today’s agreement gives Ellis providers additional incentive to continue practicing in the communities we serve by connecting them to the resources of a national health care network. St. Peter’s and Ellis have proven that, together, we can have a meaningful impact on improving access to care.”
SPHP and Ellis announced in October 2020 they had signed a letter of intent to examine the joining of both health care systems. The signing of the PTA, along with a proposed two-year management services agreement—now before the New York State Department of Health for approval – are steps toward that long-term vision of a full affiliation. These collaborative agreements between both parties are designed to work in tandem to preserve quality health care services in Schenectady and surrounding areas by addressing significant financial challenges at Ellis Medicine—which are exacerbated by the departure of providers from the community.
“This is a promising next step in the evolution of health care in the Capital Region,” said James K. Reed, M.D., President and CEO of SPHP. “St. Peter's and Ellis have long been recognized as essential cornerstones for care in their communities, each continually striving to determine the best ways to improve care for the residents of the Capital Region and beyond. Partnering with Ellis under this agreement will allow us to expand and enhance the availability of high-quality health care services in the Capital Region. We anticipate the community will see more and even better care as a result of our ongoing collaboration.”
Kellie Valenti, MBA-H, FACHE, President of SPHPMA, added: “Supporting the health of the community is St. Peter’s Health Partners’ Mission and our greatest priority. We are excited to welcome Ellis Medicine providers into our network of physicians, advanced practitioners, and practices throughout the Capital Region. We take great pride in our clinical teams, who provide expert, compassionate care to individuals in times of injury and illness, as well as during primary care visits to ensure their patients can work, play, and live their lives to the fullest. The addition of 170 Ellis providers will be a significant enhancement to the team.”
The PTA announced today builds on a long-existing relationship between the two health care systems. Together with other health care systems across the region, SPHP and Ellis have worked in concert throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to provide a coordinated response to best care for and protect the community. In addition, SPHP and Ellis have worked closely for years on many initiatives, including the Innovative Health Alliance of New York (IHANY) and The Alliance for Better Health.
Since its inception, IHANY lowered the cost of care in the Capital Region for both Medicare and Medicaid – the two key populations on which it is focused. IHANY was recently singled out by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) that had a positive impact on patient care and Medicare savings in 2020.
"The success of IHANY – through improved clinical integration, collaboration, and shared accountability – demonstrates the power of regional health care organizations working together," Dr. Reed said. "The realization of better patient care through this collaborative model reinforces how a deeper relationship between St. Peter's and Ellis will yield even better results in the future."
