Reinventing healthcare one patient at a time

Press Release

Background on Ellis' decision to require COVID-19 vaccination

Monday, August 9, 2021

At Ellis Medicine, safety is one of our Core Values. This means we do everything we can to protect our patients, employees and community. For this reason, Ellis Medicine will now require all employees, medical staff, and anyone conducting business in our facilities to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

We have strongly encouraged vaccination for eligible members of our community, including our staff, since the first vaccine for COVID-19 was approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As a leader in the Capital Region healthcare community, we recognize our responsibility to do more.

Nearly 90 percent of Ellis employees have voluntarily been vaccinated to date. The new requirement is an important next step.

By Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, all employees—and any contractors conducting business in our facilities—must receive their final dose of any of the three vaccines approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA.

More than 351 million doses have been administered in the United States: The vaccines have proven safe and extremely effective against symptomatic infections, hospitalizations and death. In the simplest terms, vaccination against COVID-19 protects our colleagues, our patients, and the people in our communities, especially the most vulnerable.

Ellis Medicine employees who do not fulfill the requirement to be vaccinated by the dates outlined and do not have an approved exemption will be subject to termination of their employment.

Those who are not able to be vaccinated for strongly held religious beliefs or rare medical reasons will be required to apply for an exemption.
