Reinventing healthcare one patient at a time

Meet Our Team

Pulmonary Embolism Response Team

Ellis Medicine is a founding member of the 80-member PERT (Pulmonary Embolism Response Team) consortium, a nationwide collective of hospitals with expertise and interest in coordinated delivery of care for patients with Pulmonary Embolism. Ellis is the only hospital in the Capital Region with a PERT Program.

History of PERT

The concept of Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) was first introduced by a group of physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston led by its Chief of Vascular Medicine Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield. Since then, like-minded and forward thinking institutions have formed an alliance called the PERT consortium which enables these hospitals to share experiences,
best practices and help educate other physicians and hospitals.

The collaboration includes a trigger to a virtual or live discussion between Critical Care and Cardiology PERT designated physicians who will collaborate with other specialists such as Interventional Cardiology, Radiology, Pharmacy and Cardiothoracic Surgery to develop a diagnostic and treatment pathway best suited to that patient. This may include additional testing,
standard anticoagulation or in selected high risk situations, delivery of catheter based or surgical clot extraction. The Ellis Medicine Wright Heart Center Physicians & Surgeons have expertise in invasive therapies such as catheter directed thrombolysis, EKOS ultrasonic aided pharmacomechanical thrombolysis, AngioVac Vortex thrombectomy and surgical pulmonary thrombo-embolectomy.

The Ellis PERT team is led by Dr. Satish Madiraju, Dr. Alec Platt, Dr. Ahmed Khan, Dr. Saddam Abisse, Dr. Christopher Dibble and Dr. Steve Piacentine with support from Interventional Cardiologists and Cardiothoracic Surgeons at the Wright Heart Center. The team is a collaborative effort between several area practices including Schenectady Pulmonary & Critical Care Associates, Cardiology Associates of Schenectady, Ellis Division of Emergency Medicine, Ellis Cardiothoracic Surgery, Ellis Department of
Radiology and the Ellis Department of Pharmacy.
